Cathedral Square
Homeless Program
The
Cathedral Square Homeless Program, established in November 2005,
focuses on helping ease the downtown homeless problem by finding
housing
for those
in need. It is estimated that an average
of 60 people sleep outdoor every night in the area bounded
by Front and 16th Streets, H and L Streets. In the past many
of
them have slept on the Cathedral steps.

with a Heart," an article that appeared in The

The program is
operated
by the Cathedral St.
Vincent de Paul Society and receives help from Sacramento
Self Help Housing to find affordable housing. Through the program,
five homeless people are now receiving
housing every night
at
a cost
of $525
per person per month. Plans are underway to expand the program
to help
find housing for up to 10 homeless people.
The program has already shown significant success.
Four homeless people have found employment since the program
began in December. One homeless woman, who
is developmentally disabled, now works in a thrift store and
lives in a boarding house. A homeless man, who had
been on the streets for seven years, was helped by counselors
to obtain his driver’s license and social security card.
With those documents secured, he was shown how to fill out job
applications and finally got work in an auto shop. Another homeless
man fell on his knees and cried when he was initially brought
to his apartment; it was his first time he had seen the inside
of a home in years.
The program is funded
by property owners in the Cathedral neighborhood including Pyramid
Brewery Restaurant and the California State Association of Counties.
The Sisters of Mercy also contribute monthly. In order to reach
out to more homeless, additional funding and support is needed.

The
Sacramento Habitat for Humanity is a housing ministry based on
the Christian principles of decent housing for all people, regardless
of race or creed. Prospective homeowners work with volunteers
who build the houses as their expression of God’s love. Churches,
individuals, businesses, and other groups contribute funds. When
complete, houses are sold at no profit and no interest
to the designated families.
