Most Rev. Jaime Soto, Bishop of Sacramento

The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament is the seat of the Diocese of Sacramento, which spans 20 counties in Northern California. Bishop Jaime Soto, became the ninth bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento in a thanksgiving and accession Mass on Nov. 30, 2008.

On October 11, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Bishop Jaime Soto as coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento. Prior to his appointment to the Diocese of Sacramento, Bishop Soto served as an auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Orange for seven years. He is one of 25 active Hispanic Catholic bishops in the United States.

Bishop Soto was born December 31, 1955 in Inglewood, California. His family moved to Stanton, California in 1956 where he attended Saint Polycarp School and later graduated from Mater Dei High School in 1974. He attended Saint John’s Seminary College in Camarillo, California, graduating in 1978 with a B.A. in Philosophy. He received a M. Div. from Saint John’s Seminary in 1982 and was ordained to the priesthood in the Diocese of Orange, California the same year.

Bishop Emeritus William K. Weigand retired as Bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento on November 30, 2008. He served for 15 years as the diocesan bishop.

Bishop Weigand was born May 23, 1937 in Bend, Oregon and attended Catholic schools throughout his childhood. He attended Mt. Angel Minor Seminary, St. Benedict, Oregon during high school and then entered Mt. Angel Seminary in 1955 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1963 by the Bishop of Boise. His first appointment as a bishop was for the Diocese of Salt Lake City in 1980.

Most Rev. Francis A. Quinn, Bishop Emeritus

Bishop Emeritus Francis A. Quinn retired as Bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento in 1993. He served for 14 years as the diocesan bishop.

Francis A. Quinn was born September 11, 1921 in Los Angeles, California. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of San Francisco on June 15, 1946 and ordained an auxiliary bishop of San Francisco on June 29, 1978. Pope John Paul II named Quinn as the seventh bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento and he was installed on December 18, 1979.
